About Us
The vision of providing a centre where people with a cancer diagnosis, and their carer could go to talk, and receive help and support of a holistic nature came after caring for a close family member – our Mum, and grandmother Margaret Harrison. She had been diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer Mesathelioma in 1982 at 54 years of age.
After going through this experience virtually alone, with only the district nurse for support, it was always an intention to do something that could help people in a similar situation, where they would be listened to, and supported in a holistic way. It was this personal experience that brought the realisation that the carer needed as much support as the person with the diagnosis.
The original Odyssey Centre building was on the Westfield Lakes site, and after three years of
outgrowing that space, the existing house was offered to us to use until we could eventually build a purpose-built facility.
The way in which The Odyssey Centre has been funded for the past twelve years is mainly through Reeds Hotel, without whose support we would not be able to exist. We have never been funded through any government organisations or grants, but rely totally on Reeds Hotel support and through donations for our services, and people and organisations within the local communities. We cover a radius of 60 miles, and our services are appreciated and used by people crossing the Humber.
The atmosphere in the centre is always wonderfully relaxing and reflects all the healing that has occurred there over the years. It is without exception that each member of staff has contributed in some way towards my recovery. I will always be grateful for their caring, sensitive and unobtrusive approach.John – Hull
Thank you all so much for your support and kindness, you are all such wonderful people, we always feel so much better after our visit here. Anne & Richard – Brigg
Thank you all so much. I feel so lucky to have been able to meet such lovely people who have enabled me to experience true and deep relaxation. You are wonderful. My times spent at Odyssey are so worthwhile, not only due to the treatments, but also to the people I have met, therapists and others going through similar experiences. Janice – Hull
DONATIONS & FUNDING
Continuous funding is vital for the future of our client’s care. Our services are offered free of charge and as a Registered Charity we are dependent on the generosity of voluntary donations and fundraising activities. The Centre currently needs over £150,000 per year to maintain its activity. You can help by:
- Donating directly to The Odyssey Centre
- Filling in a Gift Aid certificate to us
- Leaving a Legacy in your Will
- Organising a fundraising activity
- Using Reeds Hotel as the venue for your Wedding, Conference or Seminar location.
- Taking Sunday lunch or a meal in one of their restaurants.
Reeds Hotel is like all businesses, and has to compete for its business. By using their services you will be helping The Odyssey Centre, as Reeds Hotel profits go directly to help with funding The Odyssey Centre.
The Odyssey Centre services not only the local community, but also the larger surrounding areas of the north and south banks of the Humber Bridge.
