Local Man Walks Coast to Coast for Charity

Rod Rowbottom of Kirton in Lindsey, is walking the 191 mile Coast to Coast walk in aid of three charities The Odyssey Centre, Lyndsey Lodge Hospice and Cancer Research. The walk starts at St. Bee’s on the Cumbrian coast and passes through some of England’s most beautiful landscapes, including the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors. Rod’s journey starts on the 1st August 2011 and ends when he gets his boots wet walking down the slope into the North Sea at Robin Hoods Bay! You can follow Rod’s day-to-day progress on the link found on his website rodstrek.co.uk.

Rod says “my dad died of cancer when I was young and my mum in law also died of it only last year. Also various family members of myself and wife Jo have suffered from the illness. In fact I don’t know anyone who has not been touched by cancer, whether directly or as a loved one being diagnosed with the illness. I feel I would like to support the three charities as they complement each other in providing treatment, care & support for cancer sufferers and their families through all stages of the illness”.

Rod has family and close friends who have benefited from support offered by The Odyssey Cancer Caring Centre and Lindsey Lodge Hospice and he is keen to repay these wonderful organisations in addition to offering a share to Cancer Research who dedicate their resources to finding cures for cancer.

Rod stated “My wife Jo found that the Odyssey Cancer Caring Centre provided an environment that facilitates independent and unbiased approach to caring. Jo was the primary carer who supported her mum after being diagnosed with cancer. Having received support from Odyssey during the 2 years of her mum’s illness, this service really helped Jo cope better with the emotional and physical effects of living with cancer”

For the past 10 years Nightingale House has been the residence used to deliver therapy, however this limits the number of people who can be supported. The Odyssey Cancer Caring Centre has developed ambitious plans to build brand new ecological premises to enable them to offer complementary therapies to more people across the region. Enabling more therapists and relevant professionals’ access to a state of the art building designed to care for those who have been diagnosed with cancer and their primary carers.

The Odyssey Cancer Caring Centre are truly grateful of this wonderful gesture offered by Rod and will support him wherever possible to raise a significant amount for all three charities.
